This landscaping project involved improving a campus
courtyard surrounded by university buildings, all of them
constructed using red brick, according to code, over the past
forty years. Taking as its central aim “the use of existing assets
in providing contexts for activity,” the project sought to
transform the courtyard into a plaza able to accommodate and
generate wide-ranging student activities.
With the axis between the main entrance and the lecture hall,
standing opposite across the courtyard, as a dividing line, we
made the east half a static zone and the west half a dynamic
zone. In the marginal areas of the path, which has been led
around the court to connect the entrances of the buildings, we
positioned circular base points in a scattered arrangement̶
vortices generating varying flows of traffic in an overall
balanced manner. The largest of these base points we placed
on the west side in the form of a stage area. Then, within a
cosmic pattern of concentric circles expanding outward across
the entire courtyard from a central point, we located, like
satellites, an information kiosk, a folly, a pool, plantings, and
so on in an endeavor to produce a casual, fun atmosphere.
