The Ryukoku University Fukakusa Campus Tokokan is an extension of the existing Building No. 2, composed of a variety of lecture rooms of different scales together with common spaces. Positioned alongside Wagankan, with Kenshinkan at the campus center in between, it forms a new architectural pair on campus.
The new wing is arranged in an L-shape, wrapping around the existing mid-corridor block. Each floor is directly connected, ensuring a continuous circulation loop that integrates old and new.
Guided by the concept of “Turning Fukakusa into a Forest,” the design responds to the diversification of learning environments, especially by linking indoor and outdoor spaces. Beyond simple greening, terraces were introduced as gathering places, and these are interwoven across multiple levels to create a three-dimensional network of places. As a result, circulation routes become not just passages but spaces of pause and encounter, enriched with greenery.
By blending interior and exterior domains, commons and terraces can flexibly serve as seminar spaces, while lecture rooms can also be used for community-collaborative programs. This interchangeability is central to the project’s aim of fostering new modes of learning and engagement.
